Biogragraphy

John was born about 1768 according to his disposistion 12 Sep 1838 in support of Mary (Rowley) Mott's application for pension: "And deponent further states that he is now about seventy years of age and is the oldest of his father's family now living, except her, the said Mary Mott. . ."[1] He was the son of Jonathan Rowley and Elizabeth Hopkins.

On 8 Aug 1786 he witnessed at 18 years of age the deed between his father or brother Jonathan and his brother Joseph.[2]

He would have been one of the males in his father's appearance on the 1790 U.S. Federal Census.[3]

In 1795, John Rowley, pioneer, settled in New York and built a school-house "Rowley's Schoolhouse" which was later settled and renamed for their former village by former inhabitatants of Cheshire, Connecticut.[4]

  • 0n 1800 U.S. Federal Census, he appeared showing 1-2-0-1-0 and 1-0-0-1-0[5]
  • On 1810 U.S. Federal Census, he appeared showing 2-0-0-0-1, 0-3-0-0-1[6]

The new inhabitants arrived about 1815. About the same time or a year earlier, "John built a saw-mill on the creek. He also ran a distillery, which so annoyed some of the staid townsfolk of the locality that they left the settlement."[4]

  • On 1820 U.S. Federal Census, he appeared showing 0-0-0-1-0-1 and 0-0-1-0-1[7]
  • On 1830 U.S. Federal Census, he appeared showing one male 50-60 and one female 15-20[8]

He appeared 12 Sep 1838 in Ontario County, New York in the Court of Common Pleas[9]

  • On 1840 U.S. Federal Census, he appeared showing one male 70-80 and one female 50-60[10]

He died after the 1840 U.S. Census, probably in Canandaigua, New York.
