Biography

Jane Russel / Russell was born at St. John, New Brunswick about 1853. (The Dominion of Canada was created on July 1, 1867.) Her parents may have been William Russel and Jane. Jane married John Howes at St. John, New Brunswick in 1873.

According to the 1880 US Federal Census, both Jane's parents were born in England. That Census also shows them in Cambridge, Massachusetts, so at some point they came down from Canada.

Research Notes

A coincidence that could mislead some genealogists: the 1891 English census has a Jane Howes, born about 1853, living in Norfolk with a son named John. This is not our Jane Russell.

Jane's Parents

Possible lead on Jane's father:

The 1871 Canada Census [1] has a Jane Russel born about 1854 in St Johns, New Brunswick. At the time of the census, she was living in Albert Ward, St Johns. The census has a William Russel, 53 yrs old and born in England and also lists Elizabeth Russel, 14, and George H Russel, 10, both born in New Brunswick. This could be Jane with her father and siblings. Of note, William is the middle name of her youngest son as well as the first name of his oldest son.

DNA Connections
It may be possible to confirm family relationships with Jane by comparing test results with other carriers of her mitochondrial DNA. However, there are no known mtDNA test-takers in her direct maternal line. It is likely that these autosomal DNA test-takers will share some percentage of DNA with Jane:

A DNA match of mine on Ancestry.com, B. A. G. (administered by Robbie_Rennie), has a connection to a Mary Russell, born 1828 in New Brunswick, Canada. What's her connection to Jane?
