Biography

Birth

On 29 Aug 1734, James and Mary White Russell's son Barnabas was b. in Yarmouth, Barnstable, Massachusetts. [1][2]

Marriage

Barnabas married Judith (Penney) Russell the 23rd of November, 1758, in New Braintree, Worcester, MA.[3][4]

Military Service

Appears to have served in Capt. Ichabod Dexter's Co., Col. B. Woodbridge's Regt., from the 16th of May, 1775[76?] to the 1st of August, 1775[76?] (2 months & 20 days.), enlisting at Savoy, Berkshire, MA, & being from Guilford, VT.[5][6]

May have served in the 5th Massachusetts's Regiment under Col. Rufus Putnam and Capt Benjamin Gates, enlisting for 8 months on the 15th of May, 1778, with credit going to the town of Petersham, Worcester, MA.[7][8] The problem with this potential service, is that Petersham is not a location that this Barnabas is associated with. However, Petersham is just two towns north of New Braintree where Barnabas & Judith married. Also, he may have been in the 1772 New York census (now VT) at Guilford, but his first known piece of land in Guilford wasn't until 1785. This may have allowed for some fluidity of movement.

He was a private in Capt. Blakelee's company from Vermont in 1781.

Despite the sources provided, Barnabas doesn't appear in either the DAR or SAR databases.

Biographical Notes

Barnabas Russell moved his family to Hoosick, Rensselaer, NY sometime before 1800, as he shows up in the 1800 and 1810 Federal Census as head of household in Hoosick.

The previously provided date of 1787 for Barnabas' death, is actually the date he sold his property in Guilford, Vermont to Jacob Wright, Jr. and then moved to Rensselaer County, New York.

Barnabas is mentioned in a 1819 deed, involving supposed son, Comfort Russell, who is selling land in Hoosick, Rensselaer, NY.[9] Further, it is supposed that Barnabas Russell is living with Comfort in the 1820 NY Census, Hoosick, Rensselaer, NY, as there is another male 45 years & up.[10]
