He was a merchant and he bore the title of captain as he dealt in many important matters connected with the Indian tribes.
He was appointed Albany's first mayor by Governor George Clinton and served from October 15, 1750 to 1754.
Death
He died May 24, 1765 and was buried in Albany Rural Cemetery.[3]
His will was dated 17 May 1765 and probated 6 June 1765, In it he names his only son, Peter Sanders, and daughters Maria, Deborah, Catherine, and Elizabeth. The will names his brother, John Sanders and Stephen Van Renselaer executors. It also mentions a cousin Jacob Sanders as occupant of land owned in Dutchess County.[14]
