Henry was the eldest son of Edwin Sandys and his fourth wife Catherine. He was born in about 1605. [1]
He succeeded to the estate of Norborne-court on the death of his father in 1629. [2] Sandys was still a minor, barely out of university, when he was elected to Parliament at Mitchell in 1625 after failing to secure a seat at Sandwich, the borough closest to Northbourne. [3]
Henry married Margaret, daughter of Sir William Hammond. [1] They had one son Edwin, who died in London and was buried at Northbourne on on 19 Jun 1633. [4]
Henry left a will dated 21 Feb 1636 and requested burial in the church at Northbourne, close to the burial place of his late father. [5]He made bequests to and mentioned:
the child my wife is carrying
my brother Richard Sandys
my brother Robert Sandys
my brother Thomas Sandys
my wife Margaret
my father and mother, both deceased
Sir Richard Bulkely. Knight
Sir William Jones, Knight
Thomas Bulkeley, esq
my brother Edwyn Sandys
my sister Lady Elizabeth Wilsford
my sisters Katherine, Marie, Elizabeth and Penelope
my brother (in law) Sir Thomas Wilsford
my brother (in law) Mr Anthony Hamond
The parish register of Northbourne noted that "Captain Henry Sandys, Esq died at London, buried 7 Aug 1640.[6]
By the time he died in London in July 1640, Sandys owed his creditors more than £8,000, over and above the debts inherited from his father. More than half of this amount consisted of bonds incurred through defaulting on loans. The debts incurred by his father and then added to by Henry caused a family rift; his brother eventually taking Northbourne Manor by force from his brother Richard and ejecting him from the property at gunpoint. [3]
Research Notes
Hasted says that Henry died s.p. [2] but the Visitation of Kent, citing Stowe, lists a son (in square brackets), Edwyn. Either this is an error or Edwyn died before his father. The third brother Richard was named executor of Henry's will and Norborne was left to his wife for life rather than his next brother Edwin. A family rift resulted in litigation by Edwin. No son of Henry is mentioned in the description in the HoP article. [7]
