Biography

The birth date shown above is his date of baptism. He was his parents' third son. Richard, son of Edward Sandys, was baptised on 11 August 1616 in Ombersley, Worcestershire, England.[1]

Richard Sandys purchased Downe-Hall (aka Downe-Court) in Kent, and was a Colonel in the Parliamentary army, died 1669; married Hester Aucher and had issue six sons and four daughters.

Richard was named in the 1636 will of his brother Henry[2], and it appears that he was not really trusted by his brother who largely passed him over, leaving control of the family estates to their younger brother Edwin. In an unpleasant turn of events Richard was ejected at gunpoint from the Northbourne property by Edwin. [3]

Richard was buried on 17 December 1669 in Northbourne, Kent, England.[4]

Downe-Hall

Downe-Hall passed by sale, in the reign of King Charles I. to Col. Richard Sandys, third son of Sir Edwyn Sandys of Norborne, the second son of Dr. Edwyn Sandys, archbishop of York, by Cicely, daughter of Thomas Wilsford of Cranbrooke.

Henry Sandys, the eldest son of Richard above mentioned, by Hester his wife, daughter of Edwin Aucher, Esq. of Wilshorough, was of Downe-Court, and married Catherine, widow of Sir John Kay, Bart. and daughter of Sir William St. Quintin, Bart. by whom he had Jordan Sandys, Esq. who sold Downe Court to Richard Oldner, Esq. of Exton.[5]

Sands-2076 and Sandys-65 appear to represent the same person because: intended to be the same man based on wife. Sandys is the sourced spelling of the name

Having trouble reconciling the Lancashire birthplace in the profile with the location of Downe-Hall (Kent) and the life & career of his father, who was MP Stockbridge in 1604, MP Rochester 1614. Where does the Lancashire birthplace come from?
