Biography

Daughter of Capt. Anthony and Alice (Stafford) Savage[citation needed]

Wife of William Strother, II ~ married 1651

William (II) and Dorothy (Savage) Strother had 6 children and they were:

1. William Strother, III (m. Margaret Thornton) 2. James Strother 3. Jeremiah Strother 4. Robert Strother 5. Benjamin Strother 6. Joseph Strother

This profile represents Dorothy, the wife of William Strother, Esq, the immigrant

Uncertain Origin

Dorothy's maiden name and origin are uncertain. According to the William Strother Society (about 10 years ago), we clearly do not have any evidence for her maiden name. According to the 1903 Register of Kentucky State Historical Society article, William's wife is known only as "Dorothy."

Possibly the earliest source of "Savage" as her maiden name may have been The Abridged Compendium of American Genealogy ... by Virkus, but even there it is followed by "(?)."

Interestingly, the summary of the "Strother Family Genealogical Papers," at the Atlanta History Center, reports that William married "Dorothy Savage," (no parents stated).

Dorothy may have been born in England, or she may have been born in Virginia. Some genealogies say Petsworth Parish, Gloucester County, Virginia.[citation needed] She was probably born before 1635. This is a guess, probably based on the birth date of her first child, c. 1652.

According to Sheryl Miller (without citation), it was William's son, also named William Strother (d 1726), who married Margaret Thornton, the daughter of Francis Thornton and Alice Savage. Alice Savage was a daughter of Anthony Savage. Therefore, if son William's mother and his wife's mother were both daughters of Anthony Savage, then son William married to his first cousin. This may be the circumstantial evidence for Savage as Dorothy's maiden name.

Marriage and Children

Dorothy married about 1651, soon after he had immigrated to Virginia, to William Strother.

Death and Legacy

Dorothy died in 1716 in Richmond County, (the "Northern Neck"), Virginia. William died in 1702.

Research Notes

This profile was previously attached to parents Anthony Savage and Sarah Constable. Anthony and Sarah had their marriage license granted in October 1646, about 11 years after Dorothy is estimated to have been born, so cannot be her parents. Donnelly-2171 23:34, 14 November 2020 (UTC)

Anthony Savage was married to Alice Stafford Savage (?- before 1701) and moved to his new property with his daughter Alice Savage. Just next door was the plantation that would become known as Millbank. It had been purchase just six months before by William Strother and his wife Dorothy Savage Strother (1635-1702). Dorothy was the daughter of Anthony and Alice. William and Dorothy would have six children.https://bellegroveplantation.com/history/

There appears to be an ongoing debate as to whether or not Dorothy's maiden name was Savage. There was a neighbor of William and Dorothy Strother named Anthony Savage, but there appears to be no evidence to support the claim that Dorothy's maiden name was Savage. This continues to be reported at American Ancestors. New England Ancestors Magazine, 2004, Vol. 5, No. 5, p. 42. The US President's Project would like to remove this connection, as there is no proof provided. And as previously noted, the parents were not even married until after she was born. The US Presidents Project will protect and manage this profile.

There are a couple references suggesting Dorothy's surname was Savage. Perhaps the issue is not her [uncertain] surname but her attachment to these parents. The birth date shown is also a guess as far as I know.
