John was born about 1423.[1] [2] [3] [4] [5] [6]

John married Katherine Stanley. They had 10 sons and 5 daughters:[1]

  • Thomas, cleric

Battles

John fought in the battle of Bosworth in 1485.[1] He also had a fight in 1470 with his sons against Robert Legh, which was settled with Thomas Legh in 1488 and 1490.[1]

Sir John Savage, the elder, had a Warrant dated at Shene, on 4 June, 7 Henry VII [1492], to be released from prison, where he'd been committed owing to the nonappearance in Court of his son Richard, who was supposed to have murdered Thomas Starkey, of Stratton, gentleman; Sir John Savage, the younger, was surety for Richard's appearance.[7]

Death

John died 22 November, 1495, and was buried at Macclesfield, Cheshire, with his wife.[1]

Research Notes

Dulcia Savage who married Henry Bold is currently shown as a daughter of the John Savage of this profile and Katherine Stanley. There is uncertainty about Dulcia's parentage. Douglas Richardson said in a 2022 post that these uncertainties had caused him not to list Dulcie as a daughter of any John Savage in his books (Magna Carta Ancestry and Royal Ancestry), but that subsequent research now led him to propose that Dulcie's parents were John Savage-23, father of the John of this profile, and Eleanor Brereton. As Brad Verity pointed out in a response, this is a possibility but not a certainty, and it remains possible that her parents were the John of this profile and Katherine Stanley. For full discussion, see the conversation in soc.genealogy.medieval.

Magna Carta Project

John Savage is a descendant of Magna Carta surety baron Saher de Quincy and ancestor of Gateway Ancestor John Fenwick (see his profile for the trail identified by the Magna Carta Project). As of 2 January 2021, John Fenwick was not in a badged trail, and none of the trails identified for him are currently being developed.
  • Needs Development: This profile needs development to bring it up to the project's standards (see the project's checklist).
See Base Camp for information about Magna Carta trails. See the project's glossary for project-specific terms, such as a "badged trail".

PMs: The Magna Carta Project was added as co-PM of this profile as it is part of a Richardson-documented trail from Gateway John Fenwick to surety Saher de Quincy. See the trail here: https://www.wikitree.com/wiki/Fenwick-267#Magna_Carta_Trails. This profile will eventually be developed for the project but we welcome any/all improvements. Thanks!

looks like the trail took a wrong turn... RF says Savage-199 is a cousin of Bohun-7. It's apparently his wife that's the lineal descendant of Bohun-7 (according to the Relationship Finder).

Hi! The Magna Carta project has identified this profile as on a 'trail' from Gateway Ancestor Amy Pynchon to Surety Baron Henry de Bohun. We will be updating this profile in line with project guidelines. (See Base Camp, contact person Anderson-35092)
