Biography

Cross of St George
Joan (Savage) Earle was born in England.

Joan Savage, daughter of Richard Savage, was christened 18 Feb 1608/9, Widford, Hertfordshire, England. [1] Richard's wife, Joan's mother, was Mary (_____), widow of Thomas Isacke. "Ric. Savidg and Mary Isake widow were married 14 Jan 1599/1600."[2]

She married Ralph Earle, 29 Jun 1631, Saint Michaels, Bishops Stortford, Hertfordshire, England. [3][4]

Ralph and presumably his family arrived in New England about 1638. They settled in Portsmouth and later Newport, Rhode Island.[5]

Joan survived her husband and was named in his will of 1673. "first I doe order, substitute and apointe Jone my wife my whole and sole Executrix to Receive and pay all whatsoever is due Either to or from mee and that which Remains of my Estate shall bee and Remaine in the hand and possession of my said wife during her naturall life and att her deceas to be disposed and divided in maner and forme following ..."[6]

From the Diary of Samuel Sewell: 1699:
"Sept 15 . Mr . Newton and I ride to Newport, see aged Joan Savage, ( now Earl ), by the way. Her husband, Ralph Earl, was born 1606. and his wife was 10. or 11 years older than he. So she is esteemed to be one hundred and five years old."[7] Joan was not as old as was thought.

Children of Ralph and Joan (Savage) Earle named in his will dated 1673:[8]
  1. Ralphe Earle. Baptized on 22 April 1632 at St. Michael's in Bishop's Stortford.[9] He married Dorcas Sprague.[8]

In the first paragraph: "Richard's wife, Joan's mother, was Mary (_____), widow of Thomas Savage. "Ric. Savidg and Mary Isake widow were married 14 Jan 1599/1600" Should this be "widow of Thomas Isake" rather than Thomas Savage?

Good catch, Jo. It's been corrected.

Savage-1738 and Savage-488 appear to represent the same person because: Same spouse of Ralph Earle

It is assumed that Joan migrated with her husband by 1638. I'm going to add her to the Puritan Great Migration project.

Savage-2412 and Savage-488 appear to represent the same person because: Birth date/place matches; both have sons Ralph. Death year needs resolving, but Savage-2412 does have the 1699-ish date in the biography notes.
