Only son and heir of his father, who is said to have come out of Cheshire with another Savage "kinsman". As he had ten brothers it could have been one of them. This Christopher Savage was described as aged 12 or more at an IPM taken 25th March 1510 to establish the Gloucestershire estates of his maternal grandfather John Stanley of Elford Hall (d.1508). In 1510 he was described as Master Savage when complaining to the Abbot of Pershore regarding the delaying of his father's Gloucestershire inheritance. Livery of his Gloucestershire inheritance, which included the manors of Burrington, Chipping Campden, Broad Campden and Aston-sub-Edge (amongst others) was made 1519/20. In 1529 parts of his Gloucestershire lands were said to be held of him (Christopher Savage) by Sir William Compton. At this general time, Christopher was made an Esquire to the Body of King Henry VIII. He was associated with Hanley Castle in 1532 and later served as a Commissioner of The Peace for Worcestershire. In January 1539 he obtained by letters patent a 21 year lease in the Lordship of Upton-on-Severn and lands known as 'Warwicklands' effective from Michaelmas 1546. By indentures dated 20th May 1541, as Christopher Savage of Upton-on-Severn, he sold all his lands at Nether Alderley in Cheshire to Hugh Hollinshed, yeoman.
This Christopher Savage already possessed the designation "of Upton-on-Severn", Worcestershire, at the time of his marriage.[1] He had been living at Upton-on-Severn since before 1541and was also involved in various matters pertaining to Hanley Castle from 1532 onwards. He was probably resident in London at some point after that, as he was an Esquire of the Body of King Henry VIII, who, in 1544/5 granted him the castle, manor and its lands of Elmley Castle, Worcestershire which had escheated to the Crown on the attainder of the Earl of Warwick. The same year Savage sold a moity of the manor of Chipping Campden to Thomas Bonner, and the view of frank pledge and leet of the same manor to Thomas Smyth.
Christopher is also recorded as holding the paternal lands and/or manors of Macclesfield, Cheshire, as well as Aston-sub-Edge and Chipping Campden, Gloucestershire, which his grandfather acquired through marriage.
In the Calender of State Papers (Henry VIII) "Christopher, son and heir of Christopher Savage and Anne his wife, daughter and co-heir of John Stanley [of Elford] as well as George Savage, cleric, had livery of lands in Chipping-Camden, Buryton, Westington, Aston-sub-Edge, Ullington & Norton-under-Edge, Gloucestershire, whereof the said George Savage had been enfeoffed to the use of the said Christopher Savage, senior, and of the reversions of all possessions now held for life by Thomas Savage and Arnold Savage, of the inheritance of the said Christopher, the son, in Cheshire, to the annual value of £8. 14th May 1521."
His Will (which no longer survives) was written in July 1545 when he was residing at Hardwick Manor in Eldersfield, Worcestershire, where he died 23rd November 1545. He married ANNE, daughter to RICHARD LYGON, gentleman, of Madresfield, Worcestershire, by his wife Elizabeth one of the daughters and co-heiresses to Richard, 2nd Lord Beauchamp of Powick, Worcestershire.
He married Anne Lygon, daughter of Sir Richard Lygon of Arle Court and his wife Margaret Greville, and is a descendant of Edward I and several Magna Carta Sureties.
Christopher Savage, Esq. and his wife Anne Lygon appear in a trail documented by Douglas Richardson in Magna Carta Ancestry between a Magna Carta Surety Baron and a Gateway Ancestor (Saher de Quincy and Amy Wyllys).[4]
The entry for them lists three children: sons Francis and George and daughter Bridget.[2] The entry for his parents, Christopher Savage, Knt. and his wife Anne Stanley, lists two children: this Christopher and Margaret (who married William Swettenham).[5]
Christopher Savage is a 12th great-grandfather of Gregory Lauder-Frost who is responsible for the biography above.
