Biography
When Colonel Lemuel Baker Sawyer was born on February 23, 1802, in Steuben, Maine, their father, Joseph Sawyer, was 41, and their mother, Sarah Dyer, was 36. He married Sophronia Plummer Harding (Sawyer) Handy on March 16, 1828, in Steuben, Maine. He then married Sarah Abigail Brown and they had three children together. He died on March 2, 1890, in his hometown, having lived a long life of 88 years, and was buried there.

"Mr. L. B. Sawyer was born Feb. 23, 1802 and will be 80 years old next February (1882). His youngest child is not yet 3 years old." [Machias Union of July 5, 1881]
L Baker was commissioned as Captain of a Company of Infantry, 1st Regiment, 2d brigade, 7th Division, by Jonathan G Munton, Governor; Edward Russell Sec of State Oct 20, 1830. In 1833 he was commissioned as Major; in 1836 as Lieutenant Colonel and in 1837 as Colonel. He was all through the Aroostook war. He resigned his Commission in 1842.
