Biography

Niclaas was baptised February 1, 1685 in the Reformed Dutch Church of Kingston, New York. The record names his parents as Hendric Claasz and Debora Davidtz (his wife),[1] but Hendric was not his actual father. Debora identified the baby's father as "Dirrick Wootin Legg." Analysis indicates that Dirrick Wooden Legg was Dirck Van Vliet, who had only one leg. Hendrick Claasz Van Schoonhoven divorced Debora in 1687 and made a will leaving only "an English Schilling" to this man.[2]

Probable site of birth was Ulster County, NY.

Niclaes was the second generation born in New Netherland, and was the first generation to have primarily used the more English surname tradition.

He appears to not have used his patronymic name during recorded church events and dropped the surname "Van Schoonhoven" in favor of "Schoonhoven" by 1714.

Niclaes Van Schoonhoven was married three times:

1) Neeltie Van Der Schuyven on Oct. 27, 1706 in Kingston, Ulster County, New York. Marriage banns were recorded at the Reformed Dutch Church of Kingston, Ulster, NY on Oct 20, 1706[3]. Neeltje was born about 1688 in New York and died after giving birth to twins.[2]. Children of Niclaes Van Schoonhoven and Neeltie Van Der Schuyven :

  • Angenietjen/Angement Van Schoonhoven, was bp. on September 28, 1707. Baptism was recorded at the Reformed Dutch Church of Kingston, Ulster, NY[4], She m. Jeems Algar 1727[2]
  • Debora Van Schoonhoven (Twin), was bp. on May 7, 1710. Baptism was recorded at the Reformed Dutch Church of Kingston, Ulster, NY[5].[2]
  • Margrite (Margrietjen) Van Schoonhoven (Twin), was bp. on May 7, 1710. Baptism was recorded at the Reformed Dutch Church of Kingston, Ulster, NY[6]. M. Jan Smit[2]
Note: Mother Neeltje died giving birth to her twin daughters.

2, Weyntie Quick, or Weyntjen Quik on 24 Feb 1713. Marriage was recorded at the Reformed Dutch Church of Kingston, Ulster, NY[7]. Weyntie was daughter of Thomas Theuniszen Quick (1644-11 Oct 1698) and Rymerick Jurianse Westvaal (ca 1651-aft 9 Nov 1719).   • Deborah Schoonhoven, was bp. on March 24, 1722/23. Baptism was recorded at the Reformed Dutch Church of Kingston, Ulster, NY[12]. Moved to Minisink, m. Joris Davis, baptised March 24, 1723, great-grandson of Kit Davids[2]

3. Weyntjen De Lange on June 15,1728 in Lavinia (?) . Marriage was recorded at the Reformed Dutch Church of Kingston, Ulster, NY[14]. Weyntjen De Lange, was daughter of Adrian (or Arrie) Fransen De Lange and Rachel Jansen Pier, Her baptism on Nov 12,1693, was recorded at Kingston, Ulster County, New York. After Niclaes died, between 1728 and 1733, she married Johannes (Hannes Medlaer) Metlar or Meddelaar on Mar 17, 1733.[2]. Child of Niclaes Schoonhoven and Weyntjen De Lange

  • Jonas Schoonhoven, was bp. on April 6, 1729. Baptism was recorded at the Reformed Dutch Church of Kingston, Ulster, NY[15]; died after 1790.[2]

Nicklaes Schoonhoven died about 1729, possibly at Marbletown, Ulster, New York.

As Navarro points out, this man's biological father was not Hendrick Claasz van Schoonhoven, but instead was Dirck Van Vliet. The father was identified as "nonbiological," but that data qualifier does not display on this page (unlike "uncertain").

I changed the father from Claassen-323 to Van Vlied-3. I marked this as "uncertain" because a different data qualifier is required in order to remove "nonbiological," and I don't know enough of the story to be comfortable selecting "confident."

Niclaas|Niclaes did not use the "van" prefix to Schoonhoven for his 3 marriages. He only used the prefix "Van" for the baptism of the children of Neeltje. He did not use the prefic "van" for the baptism of his remaining children.

At no point did he use the surname Schoonover for his church events.

Van Schoonhoven-23 and Schoonhoven-38 appear to represent the same person because: Investigation indicates that they are the same person. Van Schoonhoven-23 needs be merged into Schoonhoven-38, for best LNAB for his generation.

Your right, let's merge Van_Schooven-23 into Schoonhoven-38. Niclaas used "Schoohoven" for all church events after 1714. He was of course a second generation American and we were no longer Dutch after 1664. "Shoonhoven" appears to be the best LNAB for his generation. His contemporary Schoonhovens also dropped the "Van" for church events occurring during the same period. Thank you for your advice.
