Biography

Joshua Sears (son of Paul Sears and Mercy Freeman) was born November 20, 1708 in Yarmouth, Massachusetts and died September 27, 1753 in Middletown, Connecticut. He married Rebecca Mayo on February 10, 1730/31 in Eastham, Massachusetts.[1]

Joshua Sears was a fourth great-grandson of William Brewster, a passenger on the 1620 Mayflower voyage. William Brewster was the religious leader of the Pilgrims.

S.P. May, Page 84: Joshua Sears was Constable of Harwich in 1745. He was a man of large stature, and of great strength and hardihood. In 1746, he removed to Middletown, Connecticut and purchased land on the east side of the Connecticut River, in that part of town afterward set off as Chatham. In Col. Rec. Connecticut, Vol. X, we find the memorial of Rebecca Sears, admx, to the Assembly, setting forth that debts exceeded personal estate by L 135 16 10, and asking liberty to sell real estate. March 9, 1732, Ebenr Nickerson deeded to Joshua Sears, for the consideration of L 532, "about 36 acres of land with the buildings, &c., eastward of Point of Rocks, Harwich, 3 Lots: First, the eastern-most originally laid out to Capt. Jona. Bangs; ---. Second, to successors Mark Snow; --. Third, the westward to Thos. Clark, bounded on Dea. Chillingsworth Foster, Nathaniel Hopkins, John Freeman, and Clark & Cole lot." I have found no record of marriage of Theophilus, or Benjamin Sears; but think Dr. Willard Leonard Sears, (p. 578 #1) b. Glastenbury, Connecticut, 16 September 1816, derived from one of them, perhaps Benjamin, as he named his eldest son Benjamin Willard Sears.

I believe Paul Sears-3193 is son of this Joshua. Merge of Joshua Sears-1728 and Joshua Sears-3663 is underway
posted by L. Ray Sears III, P.E.
Sears-3663 and Sears-1728 appear to represent the same person because: hi -these people have the same birth date/place, death date, spouse, child Paul is correct, should be tied to Sears-1728 with other siblings. Need to merge spouses also- Mayo-1482 and Mayo-2021 Contact me if any clarification is needed for this merge. Thanks Ray Sears
