Biography

George (Seton) Seton First Lord Seton is a member of Clan Seton.

George Seton, 1st Lord Seton was the son of Sir William Seton of Seton and Janet Dunba.r[1][2]

The date of George's birth can be tied down to the second half of 1416. It is recorded that in 1437 his lands were held in ward by Chancellor Crichton, i.e. that he was still in minority. He must have attained his majority shortly before 2nd November 1437 when he was able to grant a charter for a toft of land in Tranent.

He married, firstly, Lady Margaret Stewart, daughter of John Stewart, 3rd Earl of Buchan and Lady Elizabeth Douglas, before 8 January 1436/37.[3][2] He married, secondly, Christian Murray, daughter of Sir William Murray of Tullibardine, before 8 January 1460/61.[3]

He died circa 15 July 1478.[3] [2]

He was invested as a Knight in 1439.[2] In 1448 he went to France as an envoy.[2] He was created 1st Lord Seton circa 22 March 1450/51.[2] He was invested as a Privy Counsellor [Scotland] in 1458.[2] In 1472 he went to England as an envoy.[2] , [4]

He may have had four children. Margaret Seton[3] by an unnamed mother, Christian Seton by his second wife Christian Murray[2], John[3] and Douglass Seton[3] by his first wife Lady Margaret Stewart.[5]

Research Notes

  • Complete Peerage says date of death was after 15 Jul 1478 and certainly before 1480.[6]
  • Christian Murray was originally attached to this profile as a spouse of George Seton. That Christian Murray was born before 1406 and was from an earlier generation, she could not have been the Christian Murray who married George in 1460 and had at least one child with him. She is therefore being disconnected from this profile. Stevens-17832 15:09, 28 November 2023 (UTC)
