Biography

Catherine Seton was the daughter of Sir William Seton of Seton and Janet Dunbar.[1]

She married, firstly, Sir Alan Stuart of Darnley, son of Sir John Stewart, 1st Seigneur d'Aubigny and Elizabeth of Lennox, circa 1429.[1] They had issue:

  1. Alexander Stewart[2] d. a 13 Mar 1450
  2. John Stuart, 10th Earl of Lennox+[3] b. b 1430, d. bt 8 Jul 1495 - 11 Sep 1495

She married, secondly as his second wife, Herbert Maxwell, 1st Lord Maxwell, son of Sir Herbert de Maxwell and Katherine Stewart.[1] [4] They had the following children:

  1. George, ancestor of Maxwells of Carnsalloch in the county of Dumfries[4]
  2. David[4]
  3. Adam, ancestor of Maxwells of Southbar in Renfrewshire[4]
  4. John[4]
  5. WIlliam[4]
  1. Janet[4]
  2. Marriot[4]

Catherine died between 19 Jul 1468 and 4 Feb 1478.

"Katherine Seton, Lady Maxwell outlived her second husband Lord Maxwell, She was a widow for fully 15 years"[5]

The birth dates of the Maxwell children appear to be prior to the Stewart marriage except for Adam which doesn't seem to jive with the narrative of the marriages.
