Biography

Jane Shapley, daughter of Benjamin and Mary (Pickett) Shapley, was baptized 4 Mar 1693/4 in New London, Connecticut.[1][2][3] Jane Shapley, age 12, was named in the inventory of her father taken 10 Sep 1706.[2][4]

Jane married Joshua Appleton in New London 5 Feb 1716/7[5][6][7] as his second wife. Joshua was possibly the son of Samuel and Mary (Woodbridge) Appleton of Rowley, Massachusetts. He had a son, Joshua, baptized in New London 25 Mar 1716, by his first wife Elizabeth Hubbel, who died 23 Mar 1716. Joshua died 12 Dec 1753.[2] His will provided for her. It named only son Benjamin and son Joshua (by first wife)[2][8]

Jane Appleton died in New London after 29 June 1762 (will) and before 19 July 1762 (probate).[2]

Her will was dated 29 Jun 1762 and proved 19 July 1762. She signed by mark. It made provision that daughter Elizabeth Downes could remain in the house for a year and then divided her estate equally between her living children and the children of daughter Jane Whittemore, viz. Benjamin Appleton (named executor), Mary Bulfinch, Anne Stark, Elizabeth Downes, and the children of daughter, Jane, deceased.[2][9] Inventory was taken 29 Sep 1762 and contained household goods, a pair of spectacles, a large Bible, and a house, shop and land adjoining and all other appurtenances.[9]

Shapley-49 and Shapley-7 appear to represent the same person because: The confusion over her baptism date being recorded as her birth date (which is unknown) resulted in two profiles being created. I have fixed the dates and initiated a merge.
