Lewis Sherrill was born on 14 Apr 1761 in Rowan [later Burke] , North Carolina, son of Uriah Sherrill (1727 - 1779) and Judith (Lewis) Sherrill (~1734 - 1815). His parents were married on 25 Dec 1753 in Iredell Co., NC. [1][2][3]

Lewis died on 16 Dec 1840 in Pendleton, Anderson, South Carolina, United States aged 79. [7][8][9]

At age 18, Lewis Sherrill entered Revolutionary Service in Burke Co., NC (in 1779 or 1780). He served in Captain Daniel Smith's Company under Lt. Colonel Hugh Brevard and Major Joseph McDowell. He was stationed on the Catawba frontier, guarding against the Cherokee indians. He was in several small skirmishes but no general engagements. He served about two years in all, serving until the surrender of Cornwallis in October 1781.

After the revolutionary war, he moved to Laurens District, SC, living there two or three years. he then moved to Anderson District, SC. [source: Nancy Peyton]

Lewis applied for a Revolutionary War pension in Anderson Co., SC in 1832 at age 71. The pension was disallowed on the premise that he could not definitely prove six months service in an organized unit.

Revolutionary War Service: Private, Soldier, under Capt. Smith and Capt. Levettis in Col. Brevard and Col. McDowell's Regiment, Burke Cty, NC. While residing in Burke Cty, NC in 1779, Lewis Sherrill, at the age of 18, volunteered for service in the NC militia. He served first in McDowell's Burke County Partisan Rangers."

State of South Carolina Pendelton District Know all men by these presents that I Lewis Sherrill of the State and District aforesaid for and in consideration of the sum of one hundred and fifty dollars to me in hand paid by George Kennedy of the state and district aforesaid Have granted bargained Sold and released and by these presents Do grant bargain sell and release unto the said George Kennedy a certain tract or parcel of land containing thirty acres more or less on both sides of the Big Beaver Dam Creek waters of Rocky river beginning at a stake on the west side of the big beaver dam runing thence N.o 5 wt. 25.25 near the channel of said creek Guytons corner thence N.o. 86 E.t 4.30 up a small branch to a sweet gum thence So. 3 W.t 14.00 to and old spanish oak in the edge of the mill pond guytons corner thence N.o 84 Et 13.75 to a stone in the road thence So 48. Wt 19.70 crossing the creek below the foard to the beginning, containing thirty acres more oe less together with all and singular the rights members herreditaments and appertances to the said premises belonging or in aney wise incident or appertaining to have and to hold all and singuilar the premises before mentioned unto the said George Kennedy His heirs and assigns forever and I do hereby bind myself my heirs executors and administrators formly to warrant and forever defend all and singular the said premises unto said George Kennedy his heirs and assigns against myself and my heirs and against every person whomesoever lawfully claiming or to claim the same or aney part thereof in witness whereof I have hereunder set my hand and affixed my seal this 8th day of march 1821 and the forty fifth year of American independence signed sealed and delivered the presents of John Matthews Jas. Will of Lewis Sherrill p.199-122 .... Wife Mary to have 6 negroes for life: Daniel, Frank, Ben, Franky, Lucy, and Joe. Also to have land which goes to son Lewis at her death. Have given son John a boy George of whom he has disposed. To son David a son Isaac. To son Lewis a negro Ephriam. To daughter Eleanor Campbell slave Polly. Have given daughter Judith Anderson a slave Nancy. After Judah's death to go to heirs of her body by her second husband. To daughter Rachel Moorhead a slave Susan. Have loaned daughter Ruanna Crow and her husband a slave Betsy. I now give same to Ruanna. To daughter Polly Matthews a girl Cindy. To daughter Esther Cullins a boy Amos.
