George Shirley was born the 23 October 1705, the son of Robert Shirley and his 2nd wife Selina Finch the daughter of George Finch. His primary residence was in Ettington, Warwickshire, England, he also had an estate in Monaghan, Ireland.[1]

At the age of 16, George joined the army, he was an ensign in the 1st Regiment of Foot guards. At the age of 33, George became the Lord of the Manor of Ettington, following his elder brother, Robert's death in 1738. Several years later he began a long distance relationship with a young woman, whom he exchanged love letters with. This was in the year 1742. The young woman appears to be Ann Graham of Suffolk, she got married in 1745, and George got married in 1749. The letters George received were displayed by the Warwickshire County Record Office's Document of the Month for September 2014. [2]

Marriage Settlement and Dispute

In December 1749, George Shirley and Humphrey Sturt made a deed that concerned how Shirley's estate would be divided among any of their children. There was an estate dispute: Skipwith v Shirley, that occurred after the death of George Shirley. It had the two daughters of George and Mary against the last surviving son. It was based on the marriage agreement between George Shirley and Humphrey Sturt, that agreed on what each child should receive from the Ireland estate.

By a settlement executed in Dec 1749, upon the marriage of the Honorable George Shirley and Mary Sturt, one fourth part of a moiety of estates in Ireland was limited to the use of trustees, their executors, &c., for the term of 1000 years;------George Shirley died upon the 22d of October 1787, leaving his widow surviving and four children. To see the entire deed see p.1012-1013 on The English Reports, Vol 4.[6]

Manor House and Church

The Honorable George Shirley's manor held many pictures of his relatives, and they were described in the book 'Lower Eatington: Its Manor House and Church' by Evelyn Philip Shirley. There is also a description of the monument that George Shirley commissioned to be built for his parents. The monument had Hon. George standing between his father and mother; the Earl and Countess Ferrers, in their coronation robes. There were two memorial epitaphs, the first one: "In compliance to the Will of the Right Hon Robert Earl Ferrers, His fon, the Hon George Shirley, by his fecond wife, who is reprefented by the above figure, has erected this Monument." Beneath, has a long description of his father and mother and the honors his father had.[7]
