James was born on January 23, 1752 to John Shotwell III and Grace (Webster) Shotwell, in Essex, NJ.
He married Elsie (Smalley) Shotwell (date unknown) and they became the parents of the following children: Elizabeth, Mary, William, Nancy, Clarissa, Joseph, Clarkson Freeman Shotwell, Charles, and Johnathan. [1]
James is listed in the New Jersey, Compiled Census and Census Substitutes Index, 1643-1890, Database: NJ Tax Lists Index 1772-1822, as living in Woodbridge, in 1793. [2]James is a recognized Sons of the American Revolution Patriot for his actions during the American Revolutionary War. [3][4] Ambrose Shotwell and the SAR applications are the only reliable sources mentioning that he was possibly a Spy and private agent under General Washington. He was also described as a farmer and as an express rider during the war
James died on June 4, 1795. [5] His will went into probate on 14 Oct 1795 [6]
In the book "The Lundy Family and Their Descendants of Whatsoever Surname", it states that "The home of James and Elsie (Smalley) Shotwell was on the road leading from Allamuchy to Long Bridge. Their stone dwelling-house bears the date 1770; it stands near the creamery and is in good repair. It was afterward owned by their son Jonathan and subsequently by Jonathan's daughter Emelissa, and now by Mr. J.C. Runyon."
