Biography

This profile is part of the Skinner Name Study.

Joseph Skinner was born in Jan 7 1707 in Colchester, New London, Connecticut Colony to Ebenezer Skinner and Sarah (Lord) Skinner [1]. Alt DOB 1708, Connecticut.[2] Alt 17 Jan 7/08, Colchester, father Ebenezer.[3]

He married Martha Kinne recently of Salem, on 30 April 1729, at Preston-Griswold, New London, Connecticut.[4][5][6][7]Prescot and Griswold are essentially the same places this time in history. See History of Griswold, Connecticut,

He was a pioneer in the Delaware Valley of Pennsylvania, arriving there in 1754 and later bringing his family there. Within a year of settling along the Delaware River near Callicoon Creek he left on a trip regarding his land title and never returned. Two years later his remains were found near his home in Taylor's Eddy, Northampton County, Pennsylvania. He had been shot; the death was blamed on "unknown Indians."[8]

As noted his date of death was unknown, although Dec 1755 is suggested. Burial location unknown other than "an island in the Delaware River" not far from Cashetunk.[9]

His wife survived him. They produced thirteen children.[citation needed]

Research Notes

Disputed Relationship

It is possible that Joseph didn't marry Martha Kinne, and instead married Abigail West.

Shortly after Mr.Skinner brough his family to Cushutunk, accompanied by others of the settlers, he went to the confederated tribes to make some amicable adjustment of the differences, and on his way back was killed by some unknown person. As he did not return to the settlement his wife, concluding that he had been murdered, went back to her old home in Preston. Subsequently his body was found, where he had been shot on the banks of a small stream, just above the residence of Hon. James C. Skinner-8993 and Skinner-403 appear to represent the same person because: These appear to be duplicate profiles representing the father of Abner Skinner, who married Keziah Gustin.

The discrepancies need to be ironed out before the merge can be done. You can set this as an Unmerged Match if you don't have the sources available to resolve the discrepancies right away.

Skinner-425 and Skinner-403 appear to represent the same person because: I've prepared these two for merge. The one discrepancy I left behind is the death date. I am too tired to try to parse out this page (http://skinnerkinsmen.org/malden_0707/D0010/I5.html), but I suspect it could yield a good source for that date/location.
