Biography

Isaiah Slavens enlisted, 1780, in Capt. William Kincaid's company. Col. Moffett's Virginia regiment and served several other enlistments under different commands. He was born in Augusta County, Va. ; died in Putnam County, Ind.

The following is exctracted from the F. L. Slavens 1972 Manuscript: Some descendants of Isaiah say that he signed his name with a flurish which people mistook for Slavens and the War Department and his family used that spelling. He was a small re-headed man and liked to dance. His first wife, Martha (Patsy) Stuart, was a cousin on his mother's side. They were married in Baltimore, Maryland by Rev. Wm. Wilson. He was a surveyor, farmer and horse trader. He made frequent trips to Baltimore to sell and trade horses and brought his wife, Marth Stuart, home on horseback from there in 1786. He was a soldier in the Revolutionary War, having served as a private under Capt. Wm. Kincade, Col. Moffet, Ca., Capt. Thomas Hicklin, Col. Sampson Mathis, Va., Capt. Chas Cameron, Col. McCreery, Va and Capt. George Pouge, for about two years (October 1, 1780 to July 5, 1782). During this period he was drafted three times and then volunteered for the 4th time on April 5, 1782. He was 18 yeears old when he was drafted for the first time. Participated in the battles of Hot Water and Jamestown and was present at the surrender of Cornwallis at Yorktown on October 19, 1781. He also served as a Private and Corporal in Captain Archibald Morrison's Company of Infantry, Col. W. Dudleys 13th Regiment Kentucky Vol. Militia in the was of 1812. Commanded by lieutenant Col. Wm. E. Boswell from March 29, 1813 to September 15, 1813. He was pensioned for his service in the Revolutionary War and was last paid to June 28, 1843, the date of his death. He applied for his pension on April 26, 1833. Application #16529. His second wife, Barbara Leaton Slavens, was living at the time of his death on his farm in Putnam County, near Greencastle, Indiana. She died in 1848. When he was 35 years of age (1797), he moved from Bath County, Virginia to Montgomery County, Kentucky, near Mount Sterling, Kentucky, and lived there for 31 years. From there he moved in 1828 to Greencastle in Putnam County, Indiana. He had a total of 17 children with his two wives. Isaiah enlisted in the War of the Revolution and engaged in = Parents: John SLAVEN DAR and Elizabeth (Betty) STUART. Spouse: Martha (Patsy) STUART. Martha (Patsy) STUART and Isaiah SLAVENS were married on 22 February 1786 in Baltimore, Maryland.2,566 Children were: Reuben SLAVENS, William Stuart SLAVENS,John "Jack" SLAVENS, Thomas M. SLAVENS, Henry SLAVENS, Mary "Polly" SLAVENS, Sarah SLAVENS, Hiram B. SLAVENS. Spouse: Barbara Parks LESTON. Barbara Parks LESTON and Isaiah SLAVENS were married on 19 May 1805 in Mt. Sterling, Montgomery County, Kentucky. Children were: Benjamin Luther SLAVENS,Daniel G. SLAVENS, Mary (Polly) SLAVENS, Isaiah SLAVENS, James SLAVENS, Philip T. SLAVENS, Willis SLAVENS, Sarah "Sallie" SLAVENS, Ann SLAVENS.

Died Sep 08, 1848 or 28 Jun 1843. Putnam, Indiana.
