Waldo County Marriages - Vol. I [page 137 records of Waldo, Waldo Co., Maine] Oct. 30th, 1845 Jeremiah Small of Waldo & Mary Jane Knowlton of Swanville By S. F. Miller, Jus. Peace [page 77 Picton Press]

Jeremiah Small enlisted 1861 in Co. A 4th Maine, the original enlistments were for three months and then changed to three years in late May 1861. Jeremiah Small may have served for only three months, explaining the lack of records. If he served for three years, the regiment was mustered out of service July 19, 1864, with the expiration of their term.

"On June 25, 1864, the regiment arrived in Rockland, its term of service having expired on the 15th, and after being furloughed were mustered out on July 19." Records of this first enlistment appear to be almost non existent.

On June 15th [1864], while resting at Wind Mill Point, the original members of the Fourth Maine Regiment having served their three years, were discharged. The recruits from the regiment, both present and absent, numbering 278, were transferred, on the rolls, to'our Regiment. As a matter of fact, only seventy-five men from that regiment joined ours. The other soldiers transferred from that regiment, on paper, were some of them prisoners of war and others were in hospitals. The men of the Fourth Maine who served with us were excellent soldiers and an honor to the Nineteenth. [ pages 200 & 201 ] The History of the Nineteenth Regiment of Maine Volunteer Infantry, 1862-1865 By John Day Smith

13 February 1865, he enlisted again for one year, in the 19th Maine, and later was transferred to 1st Maine Heavy Artillery.

Jeremiah was born about 1825. He was the son of John Small and Elizabeth Unknown. He passed away about 1866.

Date of Death is in conflict: Grave stone information [used above] reflects 6 September 1865. Cemetery record gives 28 Sept 1865 [possibly date of burial]. Muster Out date 11 Sept 1865 on record index card. Noted: 11 September 1865 is when the regiment was mustered out. [Washington, D. C.] Jeremiah Small Cemetery, Swanville, Maine.

The 1890 Census_Widows information, reflects_Disability Incurred, Chills & fever. This supports the theory that Jeremiah Small died of illness at Washington, D. C. and was mustered out after his death, and brought home for burial.
