Notes

Lucius, page 14, says: "Stephen, son of Stephen, lived at Sandy Cove, now the property of Jacob Meisner's sons, the old gambol-roofed house being remembered to this day. He was engaged in lumbering, owning a large part of the Great Hill, and having an interest in a lumber mill in Mill Village. He probably did some farming as most of the men of his time did. His wife was Susannah dau of Josiah Godfrey and sister to the famour Capt Alexander of the Rover. Their family were Alexander, Stephen, Josiah, Lothrop, Lodowick, His first wife dying he married Rebecca, widow of Joseph Freeman, Sr."

Stephen Smith, Jr, is mentioned in Simeon Perkins Diary, starting on July 31, 1782, mostly in conjunction with commercial transactions: Perkins was an investor and a trader in some of Stephen's cargoes. Unlike his father, who sailed the local coastal waters in a small boat (shallop), the diary describes Stephen Jr as a ship's captain who sailed a schooner on the open sea. He fished and traded along the eastern seaboard. One of his schooners was named the Harlequin[10].
