Between four and six weeks later Alexander was killed by a falling tree as he endeavoured to shield his son Robert from the tree.
They also later discovered that they had cleared and sown a crop on the neighbouring lot. They were awarded the crop itself, but received nothing for their labour in clearing the land for it.
