Biography
W. B. Sparkman Sr. was born in Appalachia, in Tennessee.
In 1831 John Sparkman and Elizabeth "Betsy" Ray were indicted in Grainger County for the murder of said John Sparkman's wife Regina (a.k.a. Rachel) Nicely Sparkman. Regina had just given birth a few days before she was poisoned with Arsenic. William Buchanan (W.B) Sparkman, Regina's son was only 3 years old at the time. They stood trial, and were acquitted in 1832. After the trial, John Sparkman relocated to the Warren County/White County area of Tennessee and married Lavina McElroy.
At the age of 35, William Buchanan (W.B.) Sparkman was killed during the 2nd Battle of Petersburg, Virginia on June 15-18, 1864. Confederate victory; Union siege begins. Trench warfare. Losses: Union 1688 killed, 8513 wounded, 1185 missing; estimate of Confederates, 5000 killed, wounded, and missing.
William served as a Confederate Private in Company B, the 38th Regiment Tennessee.
