Biography

Gilbert, Lord of Stainton

His son Bernard fitz Gilbert was succeeded by his sister and heiress Christian.

His daughter Christian de Stainton (d. before 1220) m. Michael II le Fleming, and their son Anselm referred to his uncle (avunculus) named Bernard de Staynton.

Gilbert is often proposed to be a de Lancaster. The evidence used to make various proposals about him is unclear.

Frederick Lewis Weis described him as an illegitimate son William II de Lancaster.[1] But although William II de Lancaster did have an illegitimate son of that name this Gilbert de Lancaster is known to have been lord of Sockbridge, where he founded a long lasting line of Lancasters. He was apparently living after Gilbert de Stainton, and his son and son-in-law were all dead.

However Weis cited The early history of the Stricklands of Sizergh for this information, and that books actually proposed that Gilbert was brother of William de Lancaster II's father, William de Lancaster I, making his father also a Gilbert.[2]

This is two generations earlier than Weis says, and there is no mention of illegitimacy.

Sourcing. We are citing Frederick Lewis Weis, but he cites “The Early History of the Stricklands of Sizergh,”. See http://hdl.handle.net/2027/wu.89066287624?urlappend=%3Bseq=88. But that source puts Gilbert TWO generations earlier, making him a brother to William I. Indeed, chronologically it seems hard to stick to what we have.

The theory that Gilbert might be a son of one of the William de Lancasters is an old one, but made a bit more difficult to believe in once Ragg proved that William II (who we have as father) had another son named William. So maybe we can move him to being a speculative son of William I?? Will look for sourcing about the original theory.

De Lancaster-2 and Stainton-7 do not represent the same person because: Maybe better to merge this loose end to his supposed father, who is more likely the source.

De Lancaster-2 and Stainton-7 appear to represent the same person because: Two brothers named Gilbert, in a time when surnames were not stable. Note that Lancaster-7 shows signs of misunderstandings, for example Chettell is obviously a person's name.
