Biography

"Sir Edward Stanhope, was one of the principal commanders of the Royal army at the battle of Stoke, against the partisans of Lambert Simnel. In 1497 he was knighted by King Henry VII. on the field of battle of Blackheath, for the valour he had shown in that engagement. He was afterwards Knight for the Body to the same prince, and was constituted Steward of Wakefield and Constable of Sandale Castle, in the county of York. He was also, like his predecessors Sheriff of Nottinghamshire and Derbyshire, and died in June, 1511." [1]
