Biography

James was born in 1458 probably at the family seat of Lathom, Lancashire. He was the 3rd son of Thomas Stanley, Earl of Derby and his wife Eleanor Neville [1]

Archdeacon of Richmond (Yorks.) 1500 - 1506 and then Bishop of Ely, [2]

1513 Endows the St John the Baptist Chapel at Manchester Cathedral, a joint family venture with his son John and brother Edward in Thanksgiving of their safe return from the Battle of Flodden Field [3]

James Stanley died 1515. His will of March 1514 was proved Mar 1515 [4]

He was buried at Manchester Cathedral

DOB given in this profile ‘about 1458’ is inconsistent with the dates given for James in his father’s biography, i.e., 1465-1515. As the 3rd son his DOB must be after his brother George (about 1460) who was the nominal heir and his brother Edward (1463).

James Stanley, Bishop of Ely was never married (this was still when churchmen were Catholic in England) and his children were illegitimate, so the mother's would not have taken on the name of Stanley
