Biography

George was Cherokee.

George Harlan Starr was born in the Cherokee Nation (East) in 1806, the son of Caleb Starr, a white man, and Nancy Harlan, a Cherokee and granddaughter of Nancy Ward. [1] He married Nellie Carr about 1829. They were the parents of Jane and William (died young). The family appears on the 1835 Cherokee census, living on the Hiwassie River (now Tennessee). [2] Nellie died about 1837 and George and his children were Removed to Indian Territory. George married Nancy Bell, also Cherokee, on March 5, 1840 in the Flint District, Cherokee Nation. [3] They were the parents of Charlotte, John, Mary, George, Ezekiel, Joseph, Caleb, and Samuel. George, Nancy, and children Jane, John, Mary, George, and Ezekiel are listed on the 1851 Drennan Roll living in Going Snake District. [4] The family went to Texas for safety during the Civil War and Nancy died there in 1864. [1] George married Mary Blackburn, also Cherokee, in 1877 after moving back to the Cherokee Nation. [5]

George died September 28, 1879 at Starr Springs in the Flint District. He is buried at the Starr Springs Cemetery, Adair County, Oklahoma. [6]

Slaves

Starr owned many slaves, most of which he took to Tx before the Civil War and whose names remain unknown. Cherokee Freedmen applications, however, verify the following enslaved persons in his household:

Hello: While researching Cherokee families, I observed a Cherokee Freedmen application showing George Starr was a slave owner, so I have added the names under a Slave section on this profile with categories using the standards of the US Black Heritage Exchange Program. This helps us connect enslaved ancestors to their descendants. See the Heritage Exchange Portal for more information. Pls pm me if there are concerns, happy to make corrections. Cheers.
