Biography

Margaret was born about 1536 daughter to Sir James Stewart of Beath, Captain of Doune and Dame Margaret Lindsay. [1]

In 1554 Margaret married as second wife to Master James Ogilvy of Balfour in the Braes of Angus. Their contract of marriage was made on 6 February 1553/4.[2]

There was no surviving issue of this marriage.

Margaret Stewart's only surviving sister german, Elisabeth, married Mr Robert Crichton their son being the famous "Admirable Crichton". Interestingly, John Stewart of Innermeath and James Commendator of Inchcolm were both given as nearest of kin to James Crichton on his mother's side in 1566. [3]

On 10 October 1558, Mr. James Ogilvy and his spouse, Margaret Stewart took feu from the Abbot of Aberbrothock of a fourth part of Kinclune in the parish of Kingoldrum.[4]

It is recorded in the seventh volume of the Records of Bonds and Obligations in a contract dated at Edinburgh 27 April 1563, that sometime after the death of Margaret, her brother-in-law Mr Robert Crichton, Advocate to the King, brought an action on behalf of Elisabeth Stewart his wife and Archibald her brother "in and to yare pertis of abulziements, jewellis, and executry of Margaret". By this agreement Mr Robert received 500 merks in satisfaction of his wife's right to Margaret's jewels. The pursuit of this action indicates that James's marriage to Margaret Stewart was without issue.
