Lady Margaret Stewart was the eldest daughter of John Stewart, 5th Earl of Galloway and his wife Lady Catherine Montgomorie and was perhaps born about 1696
1 Oct 1696 Penninghame, Wigtownshire, Scotland [1]
22 July 1747 Buried at Dysart 28 July 1747 [2]
Ancestry family trees for this person have her birth date as 1 October 1696 but there seem to be no sources for this date. It is possible she was born about 1696 given her marriage in 1713 and birth of a son in 1714 but there is no sources for this either. Equally the date she died in these family trees, 2 November 1750, isn't in agreement with sources that state she died 22 July 1747. The 2 November 1750 is actually the date her second husband died (see below). Her birthplace of Wigtown, Wigtownshire, Scotland may relate to Wigtown being the chief seat of the Stewart Earls of Galloway but again there appear to be no sources that confirm this as her actual birthplace.
She married, with a dowry (tocher) of £1,500 on 11 June 1713 (a contract dated at Edinburgh the same day), James Carnegie, 5th Earl of Southesk (born 4 April 1692).[3] He was attainted in in 1716 for his participation in the Jacobite uprising of 1715 and all his titles and honours were forfeited. He fled to France in April/May 1716 and never returned to Scotland.
Provision was made for her by Act of Parliament and she received an annuity of £444 8s 102/3 d. and £250 for her son by Crown Charter dated 28 August 1718. However she appeared to have joined her husband in France about 1720, was back in Edinburgh April 1723 but again lived with him on the continent from 1723-27 including at Rotterdam July - November 1727. A pass to return to Scotland was delayed because she had "conversed with the Kings family at Rome" but she arrived there on 4 June 1729. Her husband died in France 10 February 1729/30.[4]
The seemed to have had two children;[5]
She married secondly on 16 August 1733 (after contracts dated 4 and 7 August), as his first wife, John St Clair (or Sinclair), Master of Sinclair, who was also attainted in 1716.[6]. She died at Edinburgh 22 July 1747 and was buried at Dysart 28 July. There appear to be no children from this second marriage and she died without surviving issue. Her second husband died 2 November 1750.[7]
