Biography

Family

Jean was a daughter of John Stewart of Balveny, 1st earl of Atholl, and his second wife Eleanor Sinclair.[1] Her birthdate is unknown but estimated to have been about 1489. For further discussion of her parentage and possible birthdate, see the Research Note on her father's profile.

Marriage and Children

She married by a contract dated 31 August 1507 James Arbuthnott of Aberdeenshire, 13th laird Arbthnott, son and heir of Robert Arbuthnott and his second wife Mariota Scrymgeour.[1][2][3] There were four children from this marriage:

About seven months before their marriage, Jean's husband James had succeeded his father.[2] He received a crown charter of the barony of Arbuthnott 29 January 1506/7, part of the lands of Inverbrvie on 4 February 1507/8, and the barony of Arbuthnott on 21 April 1512.[1][2] By 1520, however, he was in poor health[7] and in November of that year he received permission to make a pilgrimage to St John of Ameance in France to seek a healing cure.[8] The pilgrimage was unsuccessful, and Jean found herself a widow before 13 March 1521.[1][2]

Death

Jean Stewart, Lady Arbuthnott, died 19 April 1522.[9]

Research Notes

Alexander Arbuthnot of Pitcarles and Andrew Arbuthnot have been attached to this profile as sons of Jean and her husband James Arbuthnott, but both profiles are unsourced and there do not appear to be any reliable primary or secondary sources to support these children. If no sources can be found, they will need to be detached until there is evidence they belong in this family. The daughters of 1stt Earl of Atholl would not have been Lady X in 1522, I have therefore deleted that prefix.
