Dewitt Stilwell suggested that Elias might have been a son of Nicholas' son Elias:[2]
[ Elias ] "could not have been the Elias Stilwell who married Ann Barbank of Staten Island, as given in some records of the Stilwell family. It was possibly a son of his by the name of Elias who married Ann Barbank and had children:
1. Elias Stilwell, baptized January 30, 1725.
2. Daniel Stilwell, baptized March 24, 1727.
3. John Stilwell, baptized May 17, 1730."
No evidence has been presented to suggest that Elias was the son of Elias.
Elias Stillwell, of Staten Island, b. say 1701 (not 13 Dec. 1685), living 1730 and doubtless beyond; we have found no will for him on file.
He and his wife baptized three sons, Thomas (1726), Daniel (1728), and John (1730), the first two definitely in the Dutch Church of Port Richmond, Staten Island, and the third possibly in the same place although the family record gives only the date, not the place, and no such entry can be found in the surviving church registers (which however exhibit many gaps).
they were clearly also the parents of the Nicholas Stillwell who baptized three children in the New York Dutch Church between 1749 and 1752.
Elias Stillwell was considerably beyond the normal age at first marriage when he married Anna Burbank say 1723, but there does not seem to be doubt as to his identification. He m. before 1728, and probably before 1724,

I would like to know your source for the parentage of Ann Burbank for Elias's sons instead of his first wife Sarah Stanley (daughter of Richard Henry Stanley of Middletown, Monmouth, New Jersey Colony- whom immigrated from Mansfield, Nottinghamshire, England) whom Elias married. I had to chuckle with the suggestion that there is some question about him marrying later in life before having children..... well past the normal childbearing age. I have been researching my family line for 32 years. When you see a gap in years that is substantial- there may been an entire marriage/life/children that you have not uncovered yet. In this case- Ann is NOT the mother of his sons. Sarah is. Which also totally substantiates the family legend that somehow this family was somewhat close to the Crown of England for the legend to how been given life with the story of King Charles I & King Charles II. It would also not shock me if a connection to Cromwell uncovers during future research. Also- Dr. Thomas Elias Stilwell has a published genealogy book "Historical and Genealogical Miscellany : Early Settlers of of New Jersey and their Descendants" 1916...there are other family lines listed in there as well. I also believe that this family line research should be turned over to the group on here that is researching the founding families of the New Jersey Colony and the New York Colony and that it should be flagged/tagged as such.
Stillwell-396 and Stilwell-182 appear to represent the same person because: Birth/death names and places match; many children's names match. Last Name at Birth spelling needs resolving so merge goes in right direction -- StiLwell or StiLLwell?
