Biography

The only source applied thus far is the baptism of Dorothy Poynton, daughter of John Poynton and Dorothy Stansland.

Dorothy Poynton was born about 1581. She is the daughter of John Poynton. She was christened on 18 Feb 1582 in Norton, Derby, England. [1]

Research Notes

Merged Profile

Jon Myers merged the two daughters named Dorothy to consolidate the research and conversation.

No Sources regarding Marriage

Other than that - there have been no sources found to indicate she married John Stone, John Andrews, nor George Royale. This would put in doubt if she is the mother of William Stone and/or Dorothy Royale.

Only Parental Relationships to Remain

I would propose that if no sources are found by January 01, 2023 that the relationship to the parents should be the only ones to remain and all others are severed.

Disconnect John Stone as husband

I would further propose that Dorothy Poynton be dropped as a wife of our John Stone.

If she married John Andrews in 1614, her first husband, John Stone, would most likely have died since divorce was not an option in those days. However, John Stone is known to have married for a second time to Margaret Crane on 30 September 1636 in the Parish of Eccleston in Lancashire, England. Dorothy was apparently grabbed as a wife for John Stone because of her last Name, with no evidence to support it.

Unfortunately, there is absolutely no documentary proof that John's first wife was Dorothy (Poynton) Royale, primarily because no document has ever been found identifying his first wife. I know a lot of folks are hung up on the name "Poynton," but the only Poynton manor known to be associated with this Stone family is in Maryland. Based on considerable research on all nine of Richard's children, the only one associated with Poynton is Robert Stone. After his father died in 1605/1606 Robert and his wife and possibly their first three children moved to the vicinity of Poynton in Cheshire, England. Robert's son Richard was buried there on 12 March 1613/1614, while Robert was buried there on 6 September 1623. Although a Poynton Manor House is listed as a Historical site in Ercall Magna, Shropshire, England, no Stone family is known to be associated with it, and it is quite a ways from Lancashire, England.

In line with the lack of evidence but conflicting information, I am disconnecting the marriage of John Stone and Dorothy Poynton Royale. If later on documentation is found, the connection can easily be restored.

Do you have any sources for this as the mother of William Stone, 3rd governor of Maryland Province? Others give a maiden name of JENNETT. (But they don't cite any sources, either.)

Somebody should change her LNAB back to Poynton, her father's name. Indeed, one of her matches was Poynton-14, which got merged away here.

Stone was instead her husband's name.

While I agree that it would appear that her LNAB should be Poynton, that would give John and Dorothy 2 daughters with an identical name-one married to the aforementioned John Stone and the other married to a John Andrews. More likely is that these 2 persons are actually one person (LNAB Poynton) married to 2 men. One, Stone, and two, Andrews. Additionally, while I haven't yet found proof, she appears to have had a 3rd husband named George Royle(Royle-79)(LTDB-LWL on Family search)
