[4][3] This is substantiated by an inscribed panel located above the front door of Carr House which reads as follows:

Migration of Children

Individuals named Andrew Stone, John Stone, William Stone, Richard Stone, and Matthew Stone are known to have emigrated in the 1600's to Colonial Virginia, either via Barbados, or directly into the Colony. In addition, all of these individuals are also known to have settled for a time on the Eastern Shore of Virginia in the area that was later formed into Northampton and Accomack Counties. It should also be mentioned that there was a Hugh Stone who was buried in Barbados in 1678, but no additional information has been found concerning him. [14] "At the present time I personally do not believe that this Hugh Stone is the same Hugh Stone who was the son of John Stone of Lancashire. With respect to the other individuals who settled in Virginia, namely Andrew, John, Richard, and Matthew Stone, their relationship to Gov. William Stone has been verified through various documents.[6]

Research Note

Who was John Stone's First Wife?

The bio below addresses the fact that the name of John Stone's first wife has never been found, however, a Dorothy (Poynton) Royale is still shown as his spouse in this profile. Her profile indicates she was married to (1) George Royale; (2) John Stone; and (3) John Andrews in 1614.

Although John Stone did marry secondly in 1636 to Margaret Crane, it is not known when his first wife died.

Because John Stone was not dead in 1614 when Dorothy married John Andrews (divorce being beyond extremely rare), and there is absolutely no evidence that John was married to Dorothy, and vice versa, it would appear that Dorothy was only selected as a wife for John based on her maiden name of Poynton. Because no evidence has ever been found that indicates the identity of John Stone's first wife, and equally no evidence to substantiate he was ever married to the widow Dorothy (Poynton) Royale, she should really be removed as John's first wife.

Was John Stone Married to Dorothy Jennett?

MIke Marshall gives the name of Stone's wife as Dorothy Jennett: In Northampton, England, he married Dorothy Jennett, b. 1581, Northampton, England [1] MacDonald notes nothing has yet been found to verify this.

Did John Stone die earlier?

Marshall gives a death date of 8 August 1606 i Accomack County, Virginia. [1]

My name is Jack E. MacDonald and I am the author of the book "THE STONE FAMILY OF ENGLAND, VIRGINIA, AND MARYLAND - ANCESTORS AND DESCENDANTS OF GOVERNOR WILLIAM STONE OF MARYLAND" In researching this book, I was very lucky to have the help of researchers like William Stone of Lenox, MA., access to numerous church, deed, probate and other records in England, and a lot of time to do research on my part, I noticed in your sources, however, that your URL for this book is different than what I have. The URL I have is:

In addition, there is absolutely no documentary evidence that indicates John Stone's first wife was Dorothy (Poynton) Royale. It appears someone was trying to create a connection because of the name Poynton. Richard Stone's son, Robert, did reside for a period at Poynton in Cheshire County, where his son, Richard was buried on 12 March 1613/1614, and he was buried on 6 September 1623.

In line with the lack of evidence but conflicting information, I am disconnecting the marriage of John Stone and Dorothy Poynton Royale. If later on documentation is found, the connection can easily be restored.

Jack, the link you provided to your very impressive Stone genealogy no longer works. However, I found your pdf on Wayback Machine, and have taken the liberty of integrating your material on John Stone to the profile here. This makes a significant contribution. WikiTree is a collaborative site, so I hope you will be able, from time to time, to integrate the rest of your work on the Stone family.

it seems unclear if this the notorious pirate, Captain John Stone or not. The wife and father's names match but the death does not
