Biography

Birth

No record has been found of the birth of Joanna Strout. She was born about 1693, based on her age at her death as recorded on her gravestone.[1] She was almost certainly the daughter of Christopher Strout and Sarah (Pike) Strout.[2] No documentary evidence has been found to prove the relationship, but there were no other Strout families in the area at the time, and her estimated birth date of 1693 fits nicely into the list of the Strouts' known children. Her mother and four of her siblings were baptized at Truro in 1712,[3] but by that time Joanna had already married. If the birth date of 1693 is accurate, she was probably born in the unincorporated area of Cape Cod, then officially named the "Province Lands," which became the town of Provincetown in 1727; by 1692 Christopher and Sarah Strout had settled there.[2]

Marriages

  1. Joanna Strout married Eleazer Atwood at Eastham, Massachusetts, on 14 jun 1709.[4][5]
  2. Joanna (Strout) Atwood and William Covell Jr. published their intention to marry at Eastham, Massachusetts, on 1 Jun 1734.[6] and they married there on 27 Jun 1734.[7]

Death and Burial

Joanna (Atwood) Covell's gravestone at the old cemetery at Chequesset Neck in Wellfleet, Massachusetts, shows her death date as 16 Jan 1736 and says that she died in her 44th year. A list of cemetery records published in The Mayflower Descendant in 1908 gives the date as 1736/37, but it states that its source is the inscriptions on the gravestones,[8] and the photo of the gravestone on FindAGrave shows clearly that the date given is only "Jan 26 1736."[1]

Strout-19 and Strout-219 appear to represent the same person because: Probably wasn't born the day he was married.
