DNA

Those of us interested in the genealogy of Caithness all hit a SUTHERLAND brick wall at some stage of our research.
The now not-so-new tool of genetic genealogy can be a great help in sorting out which SUTHERLAND families are related to which others.
It would therefore be very helpful if a direct male line descendant of Alexander would be willing to join the SUTHERLAND DNA project and test at least Y-DNA37.
Ideally we would also prefer another, from a different son of Alexander, so as to confirm the dna signature obtained.
Please then also join the Caithness and Sutherland geographic project (no cost) for all those with ancestry from that area.
Whereas direct male line candidates are best at quickly proving direct paternal lines, clues may also be obtained by autosomal DNA, which tests are not restricted to direct male lines. Research Note

Whereas I (Lorna) am not directly related to Alexander I believe that his family is connected to several of my family lines, most particularly the Margaret SUTHERLAND who married William GRAY, which couple were living at Tormsdale in 1809 when their daughter Margaret GRAY was born.
Alexander and Dorothy were at Tormsdale when son James was born 1815.
This Margaret SUTHERLAND was born around 1767. (At least one tree shows this Margaret as the daughter of Alexander's father's brother, the original source of this information has not yet been sighted.)
In addition there is the Mybster connection.
Both sons James and Hugh are connected, or have descendants who are connected, to the GRAY family at Mybster. It is the GRAY family in particular I am trying to connect back to my GRAYs, also at Mybster.
