Biography

Grace (Swaine) Boulter immigrated to New England as a child during the Puritan Great Migration (1621-1640).
Nantucket Founders and Descendants
Grace (Swaine) Boulter descends from Richard Swain, a Nantucket founder.

Grace Swaine was the daughter of Richard and Bassill (Saunders) Swaine, born February 23, 1627 and baptized in Easthamstead, England, February 25, 1627/8.[1]

Grace Swaine married Nathaniel Boulter by 1648, in Hampton, New Hampshire and together they had ten children.[2] Grace and Nathaniel's oldest child was born in Hampton, New Hampshire May 15, 1648.[3]

Witchcraft Accusation

Grace (Swaine) Boulter was accused of witchcraft in Hampton, Massachusetts (now New Hampshire)

In 1680, Grace Swain Boulter and her daughter, Mary Prescott, were accused of witchcraft in Hampton, Massachusetts (now part of New Hampshire). By this time, many local authorities were becoming reluctant to pursue claims of witchcraft. Most still believed in the phenomenon of witchcraft but had lost confidence in their methods for separating the guilty from the innocent. The accusations against Grace and her daughter were not pursued, although two other accused women were jailed indefinitely by the means of a high bail bond. [4]

Grace's case is far from the most dramatic instance of the epidemic of witchcraft in 17th century New England. Rather, its mundane nature invites us to examine the general characteristics of the outbreak. In the 105-year period beginning in 1620, at least 344 persons were accused of witchcraft in New England. We can ask the question — what sort of person was accused as a witch? The answer is surprising and may be particularly interesting to those interested in feminist history.

I've moved the monograph to a free space page.

I've added a monograph about the witchcraft accusation. The monograph is actually far more general than the accusation against Swain. If someone knows a more appropriate way to handle this, I will be happy to hear it.

Anderson uses the spelling Swain, so that is generally the preferred spelling. The other objections can be fixed after the merge takes place.

Since there are no sources for her mother's name, and Swaine-270 has a source showing her name was Basselle, would you please remove the mother's name so the merge can go through? thank you.

Swaine-270 and Swain-1478 do not represent the same person because: This merge needs to go the other direction, INTO Swaine. I will repropose it

Before merging, we will need to ascertain which LNAB should be used. Are there any birth/baptismal records for her as Swain? The American Genealogist (source in Swaine-270) has her last name at birth as Swaine.

What is the source of her mother's name?

Swaine-270 and Swain-1478 appear to represent the same person because: alternate spelling of last name
