Biography

Nantucket Founders and Descendants
William Swaine descends from Richard Swain, a Nantucket founder.

William Swain was born about 1619 in Hampton, London, England. He was the son of Richard Swain, a founder of Nantucket, and Basselle Saunders Swain.[1]

He came to America in 1635 aboard the ship Rebecca when he was 16 years of age..[2]

William married Prudence Marston about 1644.[3]

Lost at Sea

"Wm. [William] was lost on a vessel that left Hampt[on, NH] for Boston 20 Oct., 1657."[4]

From Dow:

In the autumn of 1657, an event occurred, which brought mourning and sorrow into several families in the town and cast a gloom over the whole community. A vessel sailed from our river, October 20, bound to Boston, having on board four men, two women and two children — eight persons in all — belonging to Hampton. From some cause not now known, the vessel, soon after leaving the harbor, either foundered, or was capsized, and all on board perished. The persons lost were these : Robert Reed, Serg'. William -Swaine, Emanuel Hilliard, John Philbrick, his wife Ann, and their daughter Sarah, Alice, the wife of Moses Cox, and John Cox their son, and as is supposed, their only child.[3]

William was born about 1619.

Should the place of birth be removed from the profile? Neither Anderson nor Stott list a place of birth for William, and I see nothing that connects his parents with this location. No specific date of birth is given which suggests there is no actual birth or baptismal record. Further, Hampton, England has only been in [Greater] London County since the late 19th century. Prior to that it was in Middlesex. It certainly appears to me that someone has confused his place of birth with the family's later residence in Hampton, NH. Unless anyone has any contrary evidence I will move the place of birth to a Disputed Birth section.

Swaine-318 and Swaine-153 appear to represent the same person because: These two are duplicates and need to be merged. Please approve and merge.

Swayne-121 and Swaine-153 appear to represent the same person because: Same birth and death. Spelling is Swain according to Anderson.

I believe you have the incorrect wife for Mr. Swain. As the wife listed died 20 Oct 1657...
