Research Notes

James TARPLEY II

Birth: 8 May 1692 North Farnham, Richmond, VA
Death: 1765 Charlotte County, Virginia,
Note N00236James Tarpley and his wife, Mary Campe, were the owners of the Tarpley Store in Colonial Williamsburg, Virgina, which is still in operation today.
"On the Southeast corner of Duke of Gloucester and Botetourt streets is a portion of a lot which was deeded separately from lot #20 on part of which the famous old Wetherburn's tavern [Richard Bland house] stands.
The first separate deed to this property is dated August 23, 1759, and indicates that a building was standing on the lot at this time. The deed follows:
1759 - August 23 (Book 6 Deeds) Henry Wetherburn, Tavern Keeper, to James Tarpley, merchant. Consideration: 120 pounds.
A certain part or piece of a lot of ground belonging to the said Henry Wetherburn, situate, lying and being on the south side of the Main or Duke of Gloucester Street in the said city of Williamsburg, denoted in the plan of the said City by the figures 20, to begin at the Northwest corner of the said lot and then to run eastwardly and along the line of the said lot on the said main street forty feet for front, thence southerly into the said lot 56 feet by a line parallel to the street marked in the Plan of the said city, by the letter L thence westerly 40 feet a parallel line to the first course and thence northwardly along the west side of the said lot to the beginning.
And all buildings ...
James Tarpley, the merchant, was in business with Tate and on October 10, 1755 advertised a very large stock of general merchandise in the Virginia Gazette. If he was established on lot #20 at this time it would place the date of the building at 1755 or before. Tarpley, however, owned a store on the present "Tucker" lot also.
After Tarpley's death his executors sold the portion of lot #20 "with the storehouse thereon" to Halcot, John and James Pride on May 18, 1767 for£450, a very large consideration unless the building was of brick."

DNA Connections
It may be possible to confirm family relationships with James by comparing test results with other carriers of his Y-chromosome or his mother's mitochondrial DNA. However, there are no known yDNA or mtDNA test-takers in his direct paternal or maternal line. It is likely that these autosomal DNA test-takers will share some percentage of DNA with James:

Tarpley-348 and Tarpley-23 appear to represent the same person because: They are of the same person, but each profile has some problems. I suggest that they be merged and the problems be resolved thereafter.

Tarpley-348 and Tarpley-23 are not ready to be merged because: I think that these two James are cousin's. I have sources that should verify this. I will try to pull these together tomorrow.

Tarpley-348 and Tarpley-23 appear to represent the same person because: same name, exact same father, same birth date, same birth location, same death year and location, son John Oldham on both profiles (should be merged too). Thank you for reviewing.

The bio needs to be rewritten with sources for each fact in a style such as I have done in the first sentence. I am not certain that citation referencing his birth is sufficient for a pre-1700 profile since there’s no link.

A great deal of the material in this profile is incorrect with respect to this James Tarpley. It should be transferred to his first cousin, once removed, James Tarpley (Tarpley-143).

Tarpley-23 and Tarpley-33 appear to represent the same person because: Pretty sure these are the same people only the mother and the children doesn't match up. Correct is tarpley-33

1. James Tarpley on this page seems to have two mothers, Mary Biddlecombe and Elizabeth Glascock. Any idea which is correct?
