Roland was born in 1908. Roland Thornton lived in the Baptist Orphanage at Salem VA from November 28,1918 to August 14, 1926. Was the pitcher on the Baptist Orphanage Baseball Team. He completed 9th grade while at the orphanage. The orphanage is now known as Hope Tree Family Services in Salem, Virginia. He really did not like the orphanage. His youngest sister was with him but she could not take it so their mother took the sister back. He was a tall guy 6 feet 3 1/2 inches. He worked in the shoe factories in Lynchburg, VA. In WWII he worked in shipyards in Baltimore, MD. He then worked as a longshoreman as a carpenter in Baltimore, MD. He passed away in 1993. Burial: Meadowridge Memorial Park Elkridge Howard County Maryland, USA His Grandson Mark Nason remembers his big hands. If you look at his fathers picture you can see where he got them from.
