In 1775 he was a signatory to the Pitt Association Pledge of Allegiance in protest against British tyranny. Pitt County, North Carolina , John TILGHMAN One year before the signing of the Declaration of Independence in Philadelphia these brave patriots assembled in Pitt County Courthouse and in peril of their lives pledged allegiance to the Pitt Association in protest against Bristish tyranny. Their early resolute action place Pitt County in the forefront of the colonial movements for freedom which led North Carolina to become the first colony to vote explicit sanction to American independence. He married Eva Dryden.[5] They moved to Dobbs, North Carolina where they settled. This John Tilghman and another kinsman in North Carolina Henry Tilghman played a major role in early North Carolina affairs.
According to Stephen Frederick Tillman, after visiting his cousin Roger at Fort Tillman in Virginia, John stopped using "Tilghman" in preference for the simpler spelling of "Tillman." [1]

In 1805 he moved to Treble, Ohio with his son Tobias and his family. "In mid-November, 1805, the families of Tobias Tillman, Alexander McNutt, John Tillman, Jr., Martin Rice, Jacob Loy, James Abbott, and John Harless began their journey. Four of the above men were married to daughters of Tobias Tillman. Also in the group were the 100-year old father of Tobias Tillman, John Tillman, Sr., and his wife Eva. ... John Tillman, Sr., died in 1809, a few months short of his 105th birthday. He was buried in an unmarked grave in the southwest corner of what is now Verona Cemetery.
