Note

Executor’s settlement estate
of Virgil Harrison Tillery 15 July 1915 in Probate Court Bullock County Alabama,
recorded in administration record C page 65 lists J.C. Tillery as a son. Union Springs
Herald 17 September 1913 listing death of Virgil Harrison Tillery, lists J.C. Tillery as a
son. Bullock County Breeze (newspaper) 3 November 1903 reads “Crawford Tillery
married Eula Mallory October 1903. My Dad was known by his middle name Crawford so
we'll use that or just Dad. He was born 19 January 1880, there on the farm in Bullock
County Alabama. Dad worked most of his life for the Central of Georgia railroad as a
Section Foreman. The railroad transferred him from Hurtsboro, Alabama to Metter,
Georgia in, I believe 1918. He was transferred again in 1935 to Guyton, Georgia and
then a few years later back to Metter, where he retired. Dad wasn't much on discipline,
if we brothers got into a fight he would just let us fight it out. Mother was much different
as she would break it up and spank both of us. Dad would from time to time take us out
on the railroad to work with him and I always enjoyed doing this. I especially remember,
I suppose it was in the late 1920s, the railroad running a special train on Sunday to
Savannah. Then from the railroad station there we would ride a street car to the other
side of Savannah and another train to Tybee island to enjoy the beach. This outing
always brings back fond memories of these trips to Tybee. I think back and reflect on the
amount of work Mother did without modern conveniences. I can also tell you that I never
heard her gripe about her role in life. She was a good housekeeper and cook and a
loving Mother, caring for us in sickness and in health. Besides all of this she would sew
a lot and made clothes for all the family. Yes indeed she was a wonderful mother.
Mother had one brother and three sisters. I don’t recall the uncle William Thomas Mallory
but vaguely remember the three Mallory aunts, Mattie Belle, Exa and Maggie, from my
childhood when Mother would take us to Alabama on the train for a visit. One aunt, I
remember was blind and played an organ that was pumped by foot. I remember the
organ well as this was fascinating to a small boy. An older brother (Woodrow) tells me
that she played it beautifully. Mother was born 27 September 1886 in Bullock County
Alabama. Her parents were T.F.M. Mallory and Martha P. McDonald. Dad died 30
January 1962 and Mother died 30 December 1968. Both are buried at Lake Church
Cemetery in Candler County Georgia. They had 9 children
1900 Census lists my Dad, James son of V.H. and Elizabeth Tillery Bullock County
Alabama.
