Elizabeth Towneley was the daughter of Lawrence Towneley, Gent., of Fulshay and Stone Edge, Lancashire and Jennet Halstead.[1][2][3] She was likely born before March 1599, when baptisms started being recorded in Lancashire.
Elizabeth married first Richard Halstead, Gent., of Windlehouse, Lancashire,[2] at Colne, Lancashire, 1 May 1616.[1][3][4]
They likely had at least one child:
Elizabeth, perhaps married Lawrence Scarborough of Summerhouse (buried 2 July 1674), as an Elizabeth Scarborough was mentioned in the 1676 will of Elizabeth Smith[3]
She married second Christopher Smith of Stannihurst[1][2] (or more Stonirakes:[3] see Chirstopher's profile) possibly on 3 May 1624 at Burnley.[3][5] They had children:
The burial of Elizabeth Smith, widow, is found in Burnley Parish records: "Burial: 23 Jun 1679 St Peter, Burnley, Lancs. Elizabeth Smith, Wid. Abode: Stoneyrakes."[7][8] Elizabeth Smith made her will on 28 January 1675/6 and it was proved 5 January 1679/80. All five of the Smith sons are named in the order of their baptism, along with names of two women, Elizabeth Scarborough of Summerhouse, County York, widow, and Blanche Smith, son John's daughter who was baptized 7 March 1651/2.[3]
Research Notes
Removed son Wiliam Smith as there is not yet any evidence that he is connected to Elizabeth and Christopher.
This family is listed in the book: "Historical Southern Families. Volume XVII" on page 184. Elizabeth is also mentioned in the book: "The Royal Descents of 600 Immigrants" on page 529.

The Magna Carta Project Leaders have looked again at the Magna Carta trail in which this profile appears and concluded that it is not sufficiently certain to be badged by the Project. See the profile of Lawrence Smith-1217 for discussion. I am therefore deleting all the Magna Carta Project-related information, and removing the Project from profile management.
I will soon be developing this profile for the Magna Carta Project as a part of a trail from Hoyle/Smith/Towneley Gateways to surety baron Robert de Ros.
This profile is in a Magna Carta trail from her son, Lawrence Smith to surety Robert de Ros. I added the Magna Carta Project as co-PM as well as the MCP project box and project section. This profile needs a lot of work. See the project checklist for guidleines. Any improvements are appreciated!
Hello folks. I related to Elizabeth Townley (Towneley) through her son Maj. Lawrence Smith Sr. who settled in Virginia with Captain Augustine Warner. Augustine Warner wife, Mary was Christopher Smith wife Elizabeth sister. My tree starts with this family. My GedMatch is M848299. Is there anyone else in the group with a GedMatch number?
Added Tracing the Towneley's citation. It is the Genealogical PDF that is on the site of Towneley .gov for the Towneley manor. pg 37 lists the Towneleys of Stone Hedge
