He had three sons in the Civil War, all serving in Company I of the 29th Iowa Infantry: John Wilson (died of battle wounds), Elijah Milton, and James Alexander.[1]

When Charles Gilbert Trent was born in 1820 in North Carolina, his father, William, was 33 and his mother, Wealthea, was 17. He married Charity Rogers on March 9, 1837. They had 12 children in 23 years. He died on September 30, 1871, in Saylor, Iowa, at the age of 51, and was buried there.
