Biography

Bodilon (also Bodilo or Bobilo) is supposedly the husband of Sigrada and father of St Leodegar, the Bishop of Autun and would have lived in the late sixth and early seventh centuries, in the latter years of the Merovingian Dynasty.

As such he appears in a number of secondary sources about St Leodegar, such as Catholic Encylopedia and various Wikipedia articles. See the French version or English version.

However Bodilon is not named as his father in any early versions of the Life of St Leodegar. Neither of the two Passio Leudegarii; Passio Leudagarii A, probably written between 680 and 692, or 680 to before 684, soon after Leudagar's death, and Passio Leudegarii B, perhaps written by Ursinus in the late seventh or mid eighth centuries[1] mention his father or mother by name.

There is a list of biographies of St Leodegar on this website Eléments pour une étude sur la diffusion du culte de saint Léger by Roger Gazeau 1971 with links and even some of the later biographies still state that the name of this father is unknown, although they do start to name Sigrada as his mother.

Bodilon in 675

There is a mention of a Merovingian noble named Bodilon or Bodilo in the records for 675 during the reign of Childeric II. He was whipped by Childeric and as a result raised a rebellion with other nobles; Ingobert and Amalbert, and assassinated Childeric, his wife Bilichilde and their eldest son Dagobert. This is dated to between 18 October and 10 November 675, in the forest of Lorges, near Chelles.[2]

This occurred the year after St Leodegar was imprisoned by Childeric II for his objections to Childeric's marriage to his cousin Bilichilde.[3]

It is tempting to connect the two events, but if the birth date for St Leodegar of about 615 is correct is seems highly unlikely that his father would still be alive in 675 or if he was, capable of leading a revolt.

Research Notes

Given that his existence is uncertain there are no reliable sources for the current parents on this profile and all the children apart from Leodegar.

More research needs to take place to see if their existence is also uncertain, or they are 'real' but have been connected to Bodilon incorrectly.

Unknown (De Treves) Trier may be father of Archbishop of Trier, https://www.wikitree.com/wiki/De_Poitiers-67
De Treves-29 and Poitiers-26 appear to represent the same person because: Bodilon husband of Sigrada - same person
Treves-15 and Poitiers-26 appear to represent the same person because: The names are different because Bodilon had no last name and he must go by the name of the area he came from (Dijon?). These profiles represent the same person, married to Sigrada.
Burgundy-219 and Poitiers-26 appear to represent the same person because: Please merge, this will make one less unidentified floater. Thank you.
