Biography

Enoch was born in 1781 in Middletown, Middlesex Co., Connecticut, the son of Amos Tryon and wife Mary.[1]. He was baptized in Middletown on August 26, 1781.[2]He was married to Sarah (Sally) Crowell of Middletown on February 27, 1803 by the Rev. Enoch Huntington.[3]

He served in the local militia and was known as Capt. Enoch Tryon. He died in 1845 in Middletown.[4][5][6][7]

Research Notes

The Commemorative Biographical Record for Middlesex County, Connecticut Part One contains a biographical sketch of Enoch Tryon which claims that Enoch was the son of Amos Tryon who in turn was the son of David Tryon, brother of George Tryon, the British governor of, first, North Carolina and, later, New York. However, history records that this governor was William Tryon. There are many biographical sketches of Tryons who make various claims of being related in some way to William Tryon, English general and governor, simply because he is a historical figure. They are consistently proven wrong.

There is a probate record in Middletown, 1795, that names Mary Tryon as guardian of Enoch Tryon age 13, son of Amos Tryon late of Middletown. Child Enoch is therefore b. c. 1782.[8]. This establishes Enoch as son of Amos and Mary Tryon.
