Biography

Temperance was born in Wethersfield the daughter of John Tryon and Esther Wright. She married James Gibbss, of Middletown in June [ ] 1751 ^[1]. They had children Ruth, Sarah, Temperance, Ebenezer and James by 1760. She died in 1791.

Research Notes

Her marriage record and birth records of children Ruth, Sarah, Temperance, Ebenezer, and James are all in Middletown records between Jun 1751 and Feb 1760 with last name of Giles ^[2]. In Portland, CT, church records ^[3] we find a James and Temperance Gibbs who some claim are this same couple. The earliest is an o.c. record for them dated 1 Dec 1751. They also include a baptism of Ruth, dau. of James 6 Jan 1752; baptism of Sarah, dau. of James 21 Apr 1754; and death of James, son of James in Feb 1760. This looks like a reasonably good match. Portland and Middletown are directly across the river from each other and the family could easily live in Middletown for town birth records and Portland for church records. The question then is which last name is correct?

A James Gibbs was born 5 Mar 1727 in East Haddam, son of Ebenezer and Ruth ^[4] who would be a good fit for the husband of Temperance. He was baptized 14 Apr 1728 in East Haddam and his sister, Ruth, the following year. The New England Historical & Genealogical Register, 1847-2011, also includes James' birth and parents with last name Gibs.

Her death date noted here as 1 Jul 1791 came from "Tryon Family in America" and a Findagrave memorial. Both these also use the last name of Gibbs, not Giles. The referenced FaG site has since been removed and TFA is not reliable. Lastly, their daughter Temperance Gibbs married Phillip Gildersleive in 1780 and the name Gibbs is in a number of records for her.

The marriage and other Middletown records must be mistranscribed as Giles when it should have been Gibbs.
