Biography

Benjamin, s. David & Hannah, was born 16 Dec 1715 in Wethersfield[1], and was baptized December 18, 1715 in Wethersfield.[2]

He married Rebecca Hurlbut [date not given] [3]. The date of April 25, 1738 in Branford by the Rev. Philemon Robbins appears in Vital Records [4] but is incorrect as that is the marriage of Benjamin Tryon (abt.1705-abt.1749) and Lucy Wheaden.

He died before Oct. 1762 when David Tryon was assigned administrator of his estate in New Castle, Delaware [5].

Research Notes

From The Tryon Family in America by Wes Tryon (accessed 24 Sep 2015) [1]:

BENJAMIN TRYON 3.2h, fifth son of David Tryon 2.1b and Hannah (Waddams) Tryon, was born Mar. 15, 1715. As a minor aged 18 years, in 1733, he chose Ebenezer Dickinson, of Wethersfield, as his guardian. He married Rebecca Hurlburt, daughter of William Hurlburt and Susanna (Brown) Hurlburt, in 1738. Susanna was a daughter of Josiah Brown. Rebecca was born Mar. 26, 1720, but her death date is not known. Benjamin was a soldier in the American Revolution, and his death date is also unknown. Four children are recorded:
David 4.14a,
Jerusha 4.14b,
Moses 4.14c,
William 4.14d.

In the Hurlbut Genealogy his son David is named Daniel. This is likely a transcription error because David and Daniel look the same when written in script.

Research Questions

(1) This Benjamin would have been 60 years old at the time the Revolutionary War started, hence I doubt the statement that he was a soldier then (possible, but only by a fair stretch of the imagination). I suspect instead it was the Benjamin Tryon born in 1749.

(2) I do not know where the date of March 15, 1715 was found, as the documentary evidence shows that the birth date was December 16, 1715. It might be worth exploring further in order to untangle the several contemporary Benjamin Tryons in Connecticut at that time.

(3) There is no evidence for a son Moses. There is a Moses Tryon son of Abiel and Hannah Tryon b 1750 in Wethersfield, but no Moses born to Benjamin and Rebecca.

(4) There are notices in the Pennsylvania Gazette in 1755 and1756 for a Benjamin Tryon, Master of the Sloop Sea-Flower traveling between Jamaica, Philadelphia, and North Carolina [6]. The Benjamin of this profile is the only known candidate. His son, David, is described as a "shallopman", someone able to transport goods by water between Philadelphia and Delaware and other locations on Chesapeake Bay.
