Biography
Amos, son of John Turner Sr. and Mary (Brewster) Turner, was probably born at Scituate and baptized in the Second Church of Scituate on June 4, 1671.[1] He is a descendant of Mayflower passengers WILLIAM BREWSTER and his son JONATHAN BREWSTER.
He married first Mary, daughter of Thomas and Elizabeth (Stockbridge) Hiland, at Scituate on April 6, 1695. They resided at Scituate where they had seven children: Amos, Jane, Anne, Ezekiel, Mary, Mary, Seth, and Lydia. Mary died on November 5, 1729.
He married second Hannah (Gill) Clapp, daughter of Thomas and Susannah (Wilson) Gill. They were married at Scituate on November 19, 1730. She was the widow of John Clapp.
Amos died on April 13, 1739 and was buried in First Parish Cemetery at Scituate Harbor next to his first wife.
Amos and Hannah had no children. There is no record of Hannah's death.
His will is dated 13 April 1739 and proved on 19 April 1739 in Plymouth. He mentions his wife Hannah, and his children, Ezekiel Turner, Seth Turner, Ann Stockbridge, Jane Otis, Mary Turner, and Lydia Turner, his grandchildren, Amos Turner, Priscilla, Jane, and Anna.[2]
Amos Turner enslaved a Black child named Phillis, whom he bequeathed to his daughter Lydia.[2] Phillis was baptized in 1735.[3]
